Very recently my business travels have taken me to the city of New Orleans and for the first time I had the time and opportunity to spend time to get to know New Orleans as more then just a tourist. I have heard about Bourbon Street many times over the years and I even watched the T.V. series Treme on HBO and even know a little about Fat Tues celebrations. So everything I knew was purely on a superficial level. At least that has all changed now.
Like I said I was there in connection with my new and growing business which facilitated traveling around the city. Don’t know if I have mentioned it here or not but I now own and run a digital marketing and consulting business and a new business is a tree care business. So as one might expect I saw many trees of all shapes and sizes as I traveled around the city. I have been in a fair number of other cities along the Gulf Coast and a couple of other cities in the South but I don’t think I have been so struck by the stunning magnificent trees there in New Orleans. The grand old Live Oaks were beyond words to me. I have always had a special affinity with trees but this city has just plain out sone themselves when it comes to the number of and condition of these wonderful creations of nature.
After returning here to CO. it’s been hard to keep my mind from dwelling on all those magnificent trees. Anyway when my mind does go in that direction I have found myself pondering what kind of value those tree have. Now I’m not talking about the value that might exist from the lumber if some unfortunate circumstance dictated the milling one those grand trees. I talking about the intrinsic value to the soul, to humanity, to the cities health and happiness that is derived from the trees being there.
New Orleans is known far and wide for the beauty of it’s parks and green areas. I for one know the change that washes over me when I walk, sit or spend any time at all under all that grandness and I imagine that there are hundreds of thousands of others that might feel the same way…at least I sure hope there are hundreds of thousands.
So can a price be put on all those elated feelings and emotions? I know that there are studies on reduced health care costs when people spend time in parks and other relaxing outdoor locations. Plus there is measured effects on reduced air pollution when the city has a high percentage of green space per population. Plus I’m sure there must other studies to the positive effects of trees and flowers and such but I’m positive all these studies and undervaluing the price of the benefits of Tree-laxation!!!
A few years ago I was married and living in one of the suburbs of Denver in a medium sized detached house with a fair sized yard (at least for a house in a metro area). I was excited because living there gave me the opportunity to improve the yard and make it something that both my wife and I could find pleasing to our senses and add beauty tho the neighborhood. When I moved into the house the outside of the house as well as the yard was, what I considered to be in a shamble.
I need to add here that I have always had a desire to grow some of the food we eat as well as wanting to grow different types of fruit that not only do I enjoy eating but some different types that are not offered in the stores to buy. So as soon as I was able I jumped into the tasks of improving the yard and exterior of the house.
The yard was a major up-hill task from the word go. The only way I could even begin was to first create a battle plan with an over all vision of where i wanted to go with the re-build. The yard had been neglecked for many years and parts of the yard looked more like a jungle then a city yard. The first task was to begin clearing an area to be able to start a small vegetable garden.
In all I believe I took out five big old, non productive fruit trees. Now when I say I took out, I mean TOOK OUT, branches, trunk and roots, EVERY LAST PIECE of the trees. Now here’s the point I want to start to make. I had the very basic of tools when I started to clear the jungle yard and especially the trees. I had no chainsaw (I did rent one twice) and nothing more then some simple basic hand tools. I used hand saws and clippers to cut up the trees and dispose of them in the regular trash cans that are picked up each week. I used an old fashioned pick axe and a shovel to dig up the base and roots of the trees, so as to be able to plant something new where the tree used to be
I know from experience that a home owner does not need much in the ways of tools or equipment to take care of a yard and dispose of the waste in a clean and proper way. So what got my goat about all this is that I just noticed some large tree branches that some one had removed from a yard and drove around with them until they had found a spot where they thought they could just dump them on the side of the road. Making an eye-sore and leaving it all for a city worker, or someone else, to have to take care of them.
This is why if everyone is just plain lazy! With a small hand saw and a pair of hand clippers those branches could of been cut up into small pieces and put into some trash containers to be disposed of the right way. WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE TODAY.
You might first think that this post might be some what off course but an event this week came home and made me think about this. I needed a large trash dumpster this week and so during the process of investigating the different firms and learning the sizes available and what size costs what I found my thoughts turning to all the huge amounts of trash and wast that are generated in this throw away wold of consumers that we live in. How there has to be found a much better way to resource what is not used up by the people of the world.

Because of an event this week I have to write about pesticides and health. I have to mention this great company, the employees I interacted with and the service I did receive from the company. I live in a complex that has seen an influx of people from Somalia in the last number of years and I hate to point any fingers but the bug problem has been out of control here in the building for a corresponding number of years. I have been able to keep the numbers down to a very few here in this unit but it’s a never ending battle because the roaches have a perfect breeding ground in the rest of the building.

As with the majority of my generation being on or going on a diet was just not something that very many of us ever considered in our younger days. That is not the case with the subsequent generations however. Obesity among young people seems to be totally out of control. So why is that, what is the major cause of being obese in younger and younger adults, teens and children?

I read an article this morning on the topic of the rising accumulation levels of pesticides in peoples around the world. Now, this information is not new to me but the article caught my attention and made me think about a couple aspects. Oh, one of the major points of the article was that as dangerous as DDT was to the planet and mankind the new combinations of pesticides is beginning to prove to be even more deadly to all life on this beautiful planet of ours.

There is always a better way to do something! It doesn’t matter if the “Something” is large or small, physical, mental or emotional. It doesn’t matter if it deals with health or wealth. It doesn’t matter if it deals with life or death…there is a better way.
What I’m going to do with this site though is focus on a better way to health. I have a number of physical impairments for which the medical doctors tried their go-to treatments with no positive results so the results were to continue being a test dummy on drug after drug after drug just to see if by chance the condition might improve -or – to leave it be and there is nothing that medicine can do for you. In the opinion of so many, many people the above mentioned is not the better way to bring health to the masses.
